Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Mature students who began secondary school in Ontario after February 2004 will be working towards a diploma under OSS, 1999 guidelines. Mature students who are new to the Ontario secondary school system may be entitled to PLAR credits.

Mature students who are enrolled in a secondary school course at Adult High School begin the PLAR process during registration by completing an assessment in English and Mathematics. Students will also be required to write PLAR assessments in Science and Canadian Studies, and must submit documentation as evidence of previous educational and employment experiences to complete the process. A PLAR information meeting is held every November and April. Once students have received a mid-term evaluation, an appointment should be make with your Guidance Counsellor to discuss the PLAR process and make an educational plan.

Note: Mature students who were enrolled in the Ontario school system before 1999 and who continue to work towards their OSSD under OSIS do not participate in the PLAR process.
